Christian is a curator at a prestigious museum of modern art that is preparing a daring conceptual exhibition. Its central idea is a 4 x 4 metre square, a space governed by absolute equality and tolerance. Together with a PR agency, the museum searches for the best strategy to make the project stand out in a distracted and event-saturated media landscape.
But when Christian falls victim to a bizarre pickpocketing incident and loses his wallet and phone, one of his subordinates comes up with a brilliant plan to get them back. As usual, Christian cannot focus on anything but himself. And much like Swedish society at large, the conceptual exhibition begins to dissolve into absurd chaos, reflecting the tension between liberal values, egoism and self-interest. Welcome to The Square, otherwise known as contemporary Europe. The film is screened as part of our exhibition program.
