Join a Curatorial Tour of the exhibition Anna-Eva Bergman & Hans Hartung: And We’ll Never Be Parted.
The intertwined lives of Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) and Hans Hartung (1904–1989) occupy a unique place in the history of twentieth-century artist couples. Their shared journey spanned their first encounter in Paris in the 1920s, a separation in 1937, the upheavals of the Second World War, and a reunion in 1952. Despite their closeness, each remained entirely distinct in style, continually refining their artistic approaches in dialogue with one another.
This interplay of difference and affinity is at the heart of the exhibition. Bergman and Hartung drew inspiration from the same sources—natural forces, the vastness of the cosmos, and the language of music—yet each translated them in a singular way. While their works are fundamentally different, their paths often intersect, creating a shared space: a place where they could live together through painting.
