The lives of Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) and Hans Hartung (1904–1989) are a singular chapter among the artistic partnerships of the twentieth century. Their shared journey began with a chance meeting in Paris during the 1920s, endured a poignant separation in 1937, weathered the upheavals of the Second World War, and culminated in a profound reunion in 1952. Despite the intimacy of their bond, each remained fiercely individual, refining their distinct artistic visions through a constant and subtle dialogue with one another.
This exhibition explores the interplay of their differences and affinities. Bergman and Hartung drew from common wellsprings of inspiration—the elemental forces of nature, the infinite reaches of the cosmos, and the resonances of music—yet each expressed these themes in a uniquely personal language. Though their works diverge in essence, their creative paths repeatedly converge, creating a shared realm where their spirits meet through the act of painting.
