Members' Curator-led Tour: And We’ll Never Be Parted

Date: 4/6 2025, 6 PM

Be the first to experience the exhibition with commentary by curatorial duo Theo Carnegy-Tan & Pierre Wat.

The intertwined lives of Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) and Hans Hartung (1904–1989) are truly unique in the history of 20th-century artistic couples. Their shared journey spanned their first meeting in 1920s Paris, a separation in 1937, the upheaval of World War II, and a final reunion in 1952. Despite their deep personal connection, they maintained distinct artistic styles, constantly refining their approaches through dialogue and contrast.

This exhibition explores precisely that interplay of difference and affinity. Bergman and Hartung drew from common sources of inspiration: the forces of nature, the vastness of the cosmos, and the language of music. Yet each interpreted these themes in an entirely singular way. While fundamentally different in their work, their paths frequently crossed, forming a shared space—a place where they could coexist through painting.
