Book Launch: Bedřich Dlouhý (edice m)

Date: 14/1 2026, 7 PM

Kunsthalle Praha, Academia Publishing and Galerie Kodl invite visitors to the launch of the fourth volume in the edice m series.

The fourth volume of edice m is the first ever monograph devoted to Bedřich Dlouhý (1932–2025), a singular figure of Czech metamodern and postmodern visual art and visual culture. A painter by nature, Dlouhý spent his entire career testing the limits of the artwork, its inner autonomy and its resilience in the external world. His work moves between illusionistic painting, in which he achieved true mastery, and spatial assemblage objects. He was also actively involved in organizing collective activities and proto conceptual actions, primarily within the groups Šmidrové, Zaostalí and Paleta vlasti. The continuity of his oeuvre rests on a stable imaginative foundation, a deep respect for the painterly tradition and a sustained interest in the Central European phenomenon of strangeness. The book presents Dlouhý’s life’s work in its entirety, situates it within its local sociocultural and aesthetic context, takes into account the shifting position of Central and Eastern European art within the global field, and at the same time reflects the broader frameworks of the art world. It includes a representative catalogue of works and a selection from the artist’s independent literary writings, which form a natural parallel to his visual practice.
