Midnight of Art: Karel Babíček’s Collection

The catalogue for the exhibition Midnight of Art represents a selection of works from the collection of Karel Babíček. It is a small representation of a compilation that spans from

the late 1980s to the present, with special emphasis on the collector’s most active period—the 1990s. The selection of artifacts rightly includes works by important international artists who were first presented in Prague by Babíček in the 1990s. The works have been borrowed either from the authors themselves or from foreign galleries. It was also in Babíček’s archive that, in addition to traditional paintings, conceptual objects and installations first appeared in a private collection in the Czech Republic.

The catalogue for the first exhibition in the series Ways of Collecting serves as a first step toward a complete inventorying and organizing of this private collection. It also includes an interview with the collector which preserves facts that are missing in other sources as well as accompanying essays that speak to the collection’s inspirational character.
