BEDŘICH DLOUHÝ

BEDŘICH DLOUHÝ
BARBORA KUNDRAČÍKOVÁ (ed.)

The fourth volume of the series m is the first-ever monograph of Bedřich Dlouhý (1932–2025), an exceptional figure of Czech metamodern and postmodern art and visual culture. Dlouhý, a painter to the core, has spent a lifetime testing the limits the artwork, its inner autonomy, and its outer resilience. He has oscillated between illusionistic painting, in which he achieved true mastery, and the three-dimensional assemblage object. He has also engaged in the organization of collective activities and proto-conceptual art actions, especially as part of the groups Šmidrové, Zaostalí, and Paleta vlasti. The continuity of his work is guaranteed by a stable imaginative starting point, a respect for the painting tradition, and a predilection for the Central European phenomenon of strangeness. The book presents a summary of Dlouhy’s lifetime oeuvre and places it in its local sociocultural and aesthetic context, taking into account the continuous changes in the position of East-Central European art in the global spectrum but naturally also considering the general frameworks of the art world. It contains a representative inventory of the artist’s oeuvre as well as a selection from his free literary production, which is a natural parallel to his visual work.
