Artist Talk: Matt Clark – Strange Attractions

Matt Clark will present the conceptual foundations of the exhibition Strange Attractions in his lecture. He will address the complex balance between order and chaos and explore how initial conditions can lead to unexpected outcomes. Clark will also discuss the process of collaborating with his team and external experts, drawing on historical projects for context. Through this lecture, he will raise questions about how new perspectives can emerge from the most unlikely pairings of disciplines.

Matt Clark founded the London-based art practice UVA in 2003. UVA merges new technologies with traditional media, such as sculpture, performance, and site-specific installations, drawing inspiration from sources ranging from ancient philosophy to theoretical science. The studio explores how cultural and natural phenomena shape our perception, with their works functioning more like events in time, combining light, sound, and movement. UVA has collaborated with institutions such as the Barbican Curve Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts, the Serpentine Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, YCAM in Tokyo, and the Sydney Biennale. Their work is held by the Fondation Cartier and MONA. In 2023, they celebrated 20 years with the exhibition UVA: Synchronicity at 180 Studios in London.
